Back when I was in Costa Rica for Fashion Week, I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing accessories designer, Oscar Hernandez from the brand Toribio. All his pieces are one of a kind. I fell in love with all his pieces, how versatile they were, hand made, easy to use and best of all, conscious of our environment.

Here, the interview I did to him via email to talk about how he sees his brand and where he wants to take it.

Toribio was created back in March 2014 by Oscar Hernandez, an agricultural engineer that loved fashion. Oscar, has always been influenced by his rural environment and his surroundings. The name, Toribio, came from his father. He wanted to honor him and his work with leather.

More than just tell a story, he wants, through his pieces to recreate and show his favorite place on earth, Costa Rica.

The brand is based on 3 pilar:

  1. Sustainability: Focused on working with organic, recycled materials and treating all leathers with a natural process.
  2. Social Responsibility: Working with artisans that have been laid off because of the use of technology by big companies. His team works non stop on investigating the best ways to go about creating these amazing pieces.
  3. Economic Sustainability: Generating enough so it can create programs for students to come and learn this craft of creating and working with leather.

A Toribio customer is a person that loves fashion but who is also informed, wants to know where their piece came from, how it was assembled.
